Carlton Veterinary Hospital

Carlton Veterinary ClinicDr. Leanne Mellbye entered the animal care field in equine research. She enjoyed the medical side of the work which led to the decision to attend vet school. In 1992, after graduating from Oregon State University, she moved to Carlton, joined the practice, and has loved.

"What I enjoy most is the variety. The animals, the people, there's something different every half hour. We have a nice practice where we really get to know the clients."

Established in 1979, Carlton Veterinary Hospital provides routine care and vaccines, as well as a surgical unit, radiology department, mobile equine team, on-site laboratory, and a small animal hospital. They have a staff of 25 people, all of which are local Yamhill County residents, "We're a more personable experience than many of the city/urban practices. We have some pretty longstanding staff and employ students in tech and vet school."

Being a rural clinic means the team treats a variety of animals. Dr. Mellbye recalls, "One of the unique animals we've ever treated was an Ibex from a wildlife farm who needed a pretty serious surgery under anesthesia. We've also had coyote puppies come in from getting into things at local farms."

The Hospital offers curbside service and telemedicine appointments. Dr. Mellbye explains, "There's some things that may be people don't need to come in for and we can do an abbreviated consultation or exam over the phone and still get them the services or products they might need. That service will stick around for situations in the future. We'll definitely keep remolding the process over time."

The Hospital values banking with First Federal because, "We're invested in the local community businesses as well as they're invested in us. Having the people you know, you're comfortable with, you get a response from right away, it's local, it is a win-win situation."

To all the pet owners, Dr. Mellbye emphasizes the importance of having a longstanding relationship with a local clinic so that in the instance that an emergency does arise, you can quickly get in and get your pet feeling better.
